The Buck Stone Background

Why did we call it Buck Stone?  The town name Buxton possibly derives from old English for Buck Stone.  Quite commonly names came from sayings or phrases. The buck upon a rock (buck-stone) suggests the name of Buxton. The buck also has reference to the 5th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, who greatly aided the development of the town, two bucks being the supporters of his heraldic arms.

The Derbyshire Dales and Peak District hold some of the most spectacular views and heritage, and I wanted to portray this in my range of clothing, made for and inspired by the Peak District. Buxton is the heart of the brand. Our town is famous for its spa water, as well as its fine architecture and building history dating back to the 1500's.

The Romans, who settled here,  named Buxton Aquae Arnametiae - Waters of the Goddess of the Grove.

Our Commitment To Offering Quality

Buck Stone prides its self on ensuring the ateliers used in the process of all our garments are all SEDEX audited (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) or equivalent and committed to ethical and moral backgrounds that follow good workplace standards and practices and are committed to the environment.  This is high on my list of priorities.  Tweed fabrics used for our hoodies and scrunchies are 100% wool and purchased in Great Britain from companies who hand make them in the UK.  Where re-useable materials can be sourced, we will always aim to use those products also.  Embroidery and finishing processes are completed in my studio in Buxton, Derbyshire where most are made to order or produced one by one.

Of course, as a small business, I can't produce everything.  In these instances, I will always use use similar experienced and carefully selected small business ateliers for our pre-made items in our FLOC collection. They are SEDEX (or equivalent) audited to ensure they have a commitment to sustainability and have a trail that starts from fabric sourcing to final production.  The garments are created from my original designs and patterns to ensure they replicate the high quality standards I always aim for.  However, over 35% of the process for the FLOC collection is hand finished order by order in my Buxton studio as well as the original sampling and design process.

Materials

My promise is to always source the highest quality materials for our garments.  This means we value and select natural fabrics over synthetic fabrics.  Our wool garments will always be no less than 60-100% wool at all times, depending on the nature of the garment.  We do not produce clothing that contains more than 40% polyester (with the exception of sportswear ie: leggings). We spend many hours sourcing the best fabrics to produce quality attire in styles that remain elegant and relevant regardless of current trends and are intended to last decades.
